You’ve probably heard the general recommendation to walk a minimum of 10,000 steps per day. There is really nothing special about this number, other than it is a good goal to aim for and keep you motivated.
How far is 10,000 steps?
For most people, it will take about 2,000 steps to walk one mile. If you are an office worker or a sedentary person in general you may only average 1,000 to 3,000 steps a day. 10,000 steps is a great goal to strive for and will be about walking 5 miles in a day, your mileage may vary depending on the length of your stride.
How to start
The first thing you should do is get a rough idea on how many steps you are taking per day. Stepboard helps calculate your daily average so you can see where you stand.
While you can try to walk 10,000 steps every day, it is more reasonable to set smaller goals to get there by gradually increasing your daily average steps. For example, if you average 2,500 steps per day, for one week, try adding 300-500 steps per day as a goal for one week. Continue to increasing your goal every week.

Once you start setting goals for yourself, you can start to look at your daily lifestyle to see where you can increase your steps. Some ideas are
Take the stairs instead of the elevator
If you need to get to the 10th floor of a building and it seems daunting, try taking the elevator to the 8th floor and take the stairs the rest of the way to the 10th.
Park further away from your destination
Going grocery shopping? Don’t drive in circles hunting for the closest spot, take that empty spot near the end of the lot.
Walk to work
If you live within 2 miles of your job and can walk to work safely, You will easily be able to hit your 10,000 step goal
Walk and Talk (safely)
Have a phone call? Work meeting? Try taking a stroll around the block as you talk. Be wary of where you are walking of course.
Of course the easiest thing to do is just get up and go outside, take a walk in a park, walk the dog, or visit a friend.
